Honeymoon Reviews

Bequa Lagoon Resort

07/20/2006   It’s easy to imagine where you want to spend your honeymoon – soft sandy beaches, tropical breezes, oceans of blue and turquoise…but when you actually look at all of the many places that offer this, the choosing is very difficult. All we knew was we wanted somewhere exotic, somewhere different than anyone we knew. Fiji was a far place to choose, but if we didn’t do it now, would we ever be able to? So, we priced various resorts al over Fiji and came upon a very reasonable 4 star all inclusive resort at Bequa Lagoon. This was perfect for us in many ways – from romance, to seclusion and quiet restful days to incredible diving and snorkeling. Being avid divers, this was the perfect blend of all that we wanted in a honeymoon. We wanted to taste a new culture, to experience a different way of life, to actually feel like we were in some exotic, primitive land, not in a ritzy Americanized hotel. What we got was all that and more. After 2 long flights, a 2 hour shuttle along the coast, and an hour and a half boat ride, we arrived on the secluded shores of Benqa Lagoon, serenaded by local villagers welcoming us with leis and smiles. We were offered a snack and a drink and escorted to our private bure to freshen up. The open air lobby and dining area is simple, but beautiful with their teak carvings true to Fijian and Balinese native design. You enter the bure through a narrow garden path that leads to a deck with a private plunge pool, private outdoor shower under trellis, all overlooking a yard with hammock leading directly to the beach. The bure is all white with carved teak wood furniture and support beams detailed in Fijian rope designs. Our room was clean, spacious, airy and adorned with tropical flowers surrounding a bottle of wine and fresh fruit. There is no telephone, no television or radio, just the sounds of nature, and we were there during a week long period of moonless nights – all you see are thousands of brilliant starts pinpointing the sky. It is incredibly breathtaking and powerful to experience nature that way. There is a small bar and some activities during the day, but after 8:00 at night, everyone heads back to their bures. This is wonderfully relaxing for the first 4-5 days, but after the 5th day, we were ready for some more stimulation. Luckily, there is incredible diving and snorkeling which can be done from shore at your leisure or by boat any morning of the week. The food was gourmet and incredible and the staff are actually local villagers who truly live up to the mantra of being the friendliest people on earth. My husband’s birthday took place during the honeymoon and they brought out a cake large enough for the whole resort to share, at no expense to us, and celebrated with us. We visited the village, saw fire walkers, learned some Fijian language, culture and history. We had the most incredible twilight massages, we partook of a Kava Ceremony, had a private catered dinner on our veranda, and had a special Lovo feast prepared for us, which is not offered to most guests. Best of all from the honeymoon perspective was a full day with a picnic lunch on a private island for two. All of this was included in our package. The native Fijians are so happy and peaceful that you can truly feel it rub off on you. They will not accept tips – it is an insult to them, but if you are “pleased with their island” you may leave a departing gift by placing an undisclosed amount into a lock box. At Christmas they open it and share with all of the villagers. It is a beautiful sentiment practiced by a beautiful people. We highly recommend this resort in many ways – but if you are looking for air conditioned hotel room with spa, room service and plush luxuries, find a chain resort. This is where you go to re-charge re-connect and leave all work, stress and worries at home. We could have gone so many incredible places for our honeymoon, and I hope to visit many of them in the future, but our step back into time at Benqa Lagoon is as close to heaven as I believe I’ll ever get.
