Second Honeymoon Giveaway at the Hanalei Colony Resort, Kauai

Connie Costa & George Gomez - Winners of our 2008 Vacation Giveaway

October 1, 2008

My husband and I woke up and got to see the view from our room in the day which was simply astonishing! The condo had windows all around so all you could see was ocean, ocean and more ocean!

We went to the concierge and met with the wedding coordinator, Nancy Guthrie. Nancy turned out to be one of the best things about the trip. She was extremely professional, helpful, caring and incredibly sweet. She gave us all of the help we needed to fine-tune our itinerary.

Next, we were off to do one of my favorite activities in life: eat. And I am the kind of person that does not take chances when it comes to food. I am the kind of girl that spends hours researching on the internet the best restaurants of wherever I travel. And indeed, I had a “list” of the so-called best restaurants in Kauai. The first restaurant we tried from the list was in Kapaa called the Kountry Kitchen for breakfast. From the coconut pancakes to the fresh pork to the fresh squeezed juice and delicious coffee, my husband and I were in heaven! The service was friendly and the ambiance was very welcoming.

Following breakfast we decided to go swimming to a beach that was recommended by Nancy called Ke’e Beach. We had to walk a bit to get to the “really good part” of the beach but it was completely worth it! It is a beautiful pristine beach with warm water and a picturesque background. It started raining while we were swimming and for the first time in my life I witnessed raindrops violently hit the ocean – a remarkable site! We spent hours at the beach until it was almost dark. We then proceeded back to our hotel in order to get ready for our romantic dinner, which was part of the package we had won.

Kauai Honeymoon Dinner

We made our way to the Hanalei Colony Resort’s restaurant Mediterranean Gourmet for our romantic dinner. When the prize quoted “romantic dinner for two in our private alcove” I had no idea that they would create such a gorgeous set-up. The private alcove was just that: a private alcove in a corner of a restaurant with a white veil that covered the alcove in order to give us privacy. The alcove was lit with about 100 candles and the décor was very island-chic. It was spectacular!

The photographer, Jennifer Prater-Henderson, and owner of Echoes Photography, was there taking pictures of the set-up and us. Jennifer is a sweetheart who made sure we were comfortable at all times. She did her best to make sure she was not imposing on our romantic dinner. In all actuality, though, we were the ones who kept talking to her because she was just so nice!

The owner of the restaurant waited on us that night. We ordered a delicious bottle of Villa Antinori to accompany the many delicacies that he brought to our table. We highly recommend the Saffron Rice Cakes, the Fresh Sliced Yellow Ahi Tuna and the owner’s famous Caesar Salad which is prepared table-side. As the daughter of a chef, I know good food when I see it. For dessert, I recommend the Banana Coconut Fosters, which are freshly picked island bananas, flambéed and served tableside over coconut ice cream.Once again, the owner created this for us tableside and it was to die for!

We ordered a second bottle of Villa Antinori, which unfortunately the owner ran out of, and thus brought us another Italian wine. Even though it was less expensive, it was still a great choice and we enjoyed it. After so much drinking and eating, we decided to call it a night and went back to our hotel room. Overall, between the charming owner, the food and bottles of wine, we had a fantastic night!
